Smyrna High School Graduation Frequently Asked Questions: (Please read this carefully)

When is graduation? 

SHS Class of 2024 graduation will be 2:30 pm on May 19th at MTSU’s Murphy Center. 

Will there be a rehearsal before graduation? 

Yes, it is mandatory! If students do not come to practice, they will not participate the day of graduation. Times and dates for practice will be announced in April. Seniors do NOT need to bring or wear caps and gowns to rehearsal, but clothing worn to practice MUST be compliant with SHS dress code. 

Who is not allowed to participate in the graduation ceremony? 

Students who have not satisfied ALL graduation requirements (including credit recovery) and students who miss more than 14 unexcused school days, or 9 unexcused absences during 2nd semester during their senior year may not participate in the graduation ceremony. Missing more than a half day is considered a full absence. A combination of 5 tardies or unexcused dismissals will count as an absence. They may pick up their diploma in the front office during regular school hours.NO DIPLOMAS WILL BE MAILED. 

Is there a dress code for graduation?

Yes. 

  1. Any color button-down dress shirt or polo with a collar, dress pants or khakis and dress shoes.

OR

  1. Dress or skirt/blouse that does not show above or below gown and dress shoes – heels or flats.

Also: 

*No – flip flops, Chacos, combat boots, or athletic shoes may be worn. No shorts, No hat decorations and No flags will be permitted.  

What cords or stoles are allowed to be worn at graduation? 

Only cords or stoles earned at SHS or distributed by an SHS club or society sponsor may be worn. Graduates may not wear awards or recognitions received from organizations outside of SHS/RCS. (The county is discussing this further)

Are students required to participate in the graduation ceremony? 

No, students are not required to participate in the graduation ceremony – however, students choosing not to participate need to let their counselor know their intent no later than Friday, April 26, 2024. Diplomas will be available for pick up in the front office during regular school hours. NO DIPLOMAS WILL BE MAILED. 

When will my student receive their cap and gown? 

JHA will deliver cap and gowns by April and graduates will pick them up during their lunch period in the main lobby. 

What do I do when my student brings the cap and gown home? 

Have your graduate try on cap and gown for appropriate fitting. Then, hang the gown until graduation day to allow the wrinkles to fall out. DO NOT IRON. Put your graduate’s name inside the cap in case it gets misplaced at the ceremony. 

How long does graduation last? 

Graduates must report to Murphy Center an hour prior to graduation start time in dress code. Graduation typically lasts 60-90 minutes. Graduates should pick up diplomas following the ceremony in the aux gym of Murphy Center. 

Is there a place for graduates to leave personal items such as keys, wallets/purses, phones during graduation? 

No. Graduates are encouraged to leave personal items in their vehicles or with family members. 

Are tickets required for guests to attend the ceremony? 

Tickets are not required, and seating will be first come first serve when the doors open at MTSU. Please note - MTSU guidelines state: No artificial sound makers (airhorns, cow bells, duck calls) and no balloons of any kind are allowed. 

How do I access ADA seating for the ceremony? 

The elevator is in the hall by the Aux Gyms and the ADA Seating is up on the track level. The ADA entrance is located on the Tennis Courts side of the Murphy Center. 

Will graduation be filmed or live-streamed? 

No, there will be no live stream or filming.
