Several students from Smyrna High School recently spent part of their school day teaching students at David Youree Elementary ways to save and invest money.
The classroom visits were part of the Teen Teach-In initiative by the financial literacy group Jump$tart. Teach-ins are held in October for Financial Planning Month and in April for Financial Literacy Month to encourage younger students to make smart decisions with money.
SHS Personal Finance students spoke to three classes about terms such as compound interest and opportunity costs. They also modernized the fable ‘The Ant and the Grasshopper’ with a focus on saving and spending.
Presenting to LeeAnn Sanders’ fifth-grade class were Steven Julia Valencia, Beverly Camacho Garcia, Frida Franco, Kay Meh, Ketorah Cesar, Kateryn Cervantes and Karen Cortez
Presenting to Kirstie Hensley and Audra Brickey’s fourth-grade classes were Brenley Sink, Carolyne Garner, Alisa Sisavath, Jessica Thuringer and Nallely Lopez Orozco.
The visits were led by SHS teacher Dr. Wally Luckeydoo, who was named Educator of the Year by Tennessee Jump$tart earlier this year.
