Create a Collaborative Classroom with Microsoft TEAMS

Descriptor of Session:

Microsoft Teams is a digital hub for assigning and collecting student work, providing feedback, collaborating, and grading student work online.  This is Microsoft’s answer to Google Classroom that brings conversations, content, and apps together in one place. Create collaborative classrooms or connect in professional learning communities– all from a single experience in Office 365. Teams also integrates with One Note Class Notebook.

Teams is only available to use with students in grades 3-12



  • Explore the Teams user interface as a student
  • Create a Team
  • Manage Team Settings
  • Invite others to join your Team and join other Teams
  • Create assignments, grade work, and submit feedback


Success Criteria:

  • I can create a new Team (class)
  • I can manage settings and features in the Teams
  • I can mute members
  • I can add and delete students (members) and teachers (owners)
  • I can create assignments, post graded work, and submit feedback to students

How could you use TEAMS to assist with instructional goals?



Task 1: Experience TEAMS as a Student


Task 2: Create a TEAM and Add Students

Work with a partner to complete the following tasks. Each person will complete the task.

Create a team

  • Watch the video- TEAMS- Create a Class


  • Use the suggested naming sequence and create a class team

(school initials, teacher username, name of class)

Example: RCS GordenE 1st Period ELA


  • Add your partner as a student (member)


Task 3: Manage TEAM Settings

Work with a partner to complete the following tasks. Each person will complete the task.

Manage Team Settings

  • Watch the video- TEAMS Manage Settings


  • Discuss with your partner which settings will be best for your class
  • Will you mute all members?
  • Will you only allow teacher to create post?
  • Select desired settings for the class


Task 4: Assignments, Feedback and Post Grades

Participants will work with a partner to complete the following tasks. Each person will complete the task.



  • Watch the video- TEAMS Assignments

  • Create a sample assignment for the student to complete. Example: Research Project Topic

o         Specify what the students will turn-in (Word document)

o         Add detailed directions

o         Give the assignment a value of 100 points

o         Allow late turn-in

Complete an Assignment

  • Open the assignment your partner created
  • Complete the assignment and submit it so your partner can add feedback and grade



  • Select the assignment and Review
  • Add feedback in the space provided by the grades
  • Add points to the assignment and POST


View Feedback as Student

  • Check the Assignment after your partner adds feedback and points and POSTS


Task 5: Setup a TEAM and Add Members (Independent Work)

Participants will have time to setup their TEAM classes and add members

  • Create your class teams and add members


Closure Activity

  • How do your students currently access digital content? What ideas do you have for using TEAMS?
  • Post in the Flipgrid linked in TEAMS
  • Evaluation
